Thunder Bird Hostel is located in the North East area of the Old City in Chiang Mai. This optimal location means that there is easy access to great shopping, bars, restaurants, and night life!
The street we are located on features many locally-owned restaurants that offer a variety of food styles (Authentic Thai, Western, Indian, and Fusion) that can cater to many dietary needs (Vegan, Vegetarian, Dairy-free, etc.). We are also located across from a lively local market that sells fruit, coffee, Thai food, and some clothing.

Thunder Bird is located in Somphet Market (Officially name is Ming Muang Market). Somphet market has been around 60-70 years ago, there is only one old building market in old city. Somphet market sells fresh fruits, vegetables, local foods, fish, meat, clothes etc. The market starts early in the morning and you can find easy Thai breakfast here or buy some ingredients for cooking.
Chiang Man Temple
Chiang Man Temple is the first temple in Chiang Mai, it was constructed during the reign of King Mengrai in 1276. The temple has many northern buildings in their area. The locals often go to the temple to pay their respect. Moreover, in the past, this temple was once the very important center of Buddhist expansion. The temple is open daily from 6 am until 5 pm. Chiang Man temple located Ratchaphakhinai road, a 5 minute walk from Thunder Bird Hostel.
Thapae gate is one of 4 gates of the Chiang Mai old city wall. It’s located at the eastern side of the Old City. Thapae. It is a very popular place for both tourists and locals to visit, and there are many interesting shops and restaurants in this area. Thapae gate is a very famous landmark in Chiang Mai that you should visit- only a 5 minute walk from Thunder Bird Hostel.
3 Kings Monument
3 Kings Monument is a bronze statue of King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Mai and his two friends, King Ramkamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Payao. They are believed to have worked together to build the city. The 3 Kings Monument is located inside the city walls at the center of the old city, and is surrounded by many interesting museums you can visit. A 10-15 minute walk from Thunder Bird Hostel.
7-11’s are a common sight in Chiang Mai. This convenience store chain is open 24 hours a day and offers snacks, cosmetics, toiletries, beverages, and more. They serve as a great escape from the heat, and a good place to get change for large bills. The nearest 7-11 to thunder Bird is less than a minute’s walk away.
Drug Stores in Chiang Mai are always labeled by a sign reading “ยา” (Ya), which means medicine in Thai. Drug stores are a good place to go for any medical needs that don’t warrant a hospital visit. They sell cough medicine, herbal remedies, antibiotics, bandages, and more. The nearest Pharmacy to Thunder Bird Hostel is located less than a minute’s walk away.
Tesco Lotus is a convenience store chain open 24 hours a day. Similar to 7-11, you can find snacks, beverages, cosmetics, toiletries, and more at Tesco. The nearest Tesco Lotus is a 2-minute walk from Thunder Bird Hostel.
This is a popular Thai bank nearby. Walk left from Thunder Bird you will see a main street, then turn left again. Walk along about 500 meters and you will see this bank. They have deposit, withdrawal, and can give change for large bills. There are also many Kasikorn Bank ATM’s around the city.
Ginger & Kafe (Restaurant)
Located between soi 7 and soi 8 of Moonmuang road. They have fusion food (Thai and western) and also a clothing and accessory shop. The interior is colorful and one-of-a-kind.
Just a 2-3 minute walk from Thunder Bird. It’s a famous massage spa in Chiang Mai. They pride themselves on good service- you’re sure to relax!
Lam Chang Temple
This small temple is an old temple in town. Chang in Thai means elephant. In the past, this place took care of elephants- hence the name. This is a popular place to visit, and just a 5-minute walk from Thunderbird Hostel.
Pizza by Hand (Restaurant)
This restaurant offers delicious western-style pizza. Though there are many great Thai food restaurants in Chiang Mai, it can be difficult to find quality western-style food. Luckily, Pizza by Hand is just a 2 minute walk from Thunder Bird Hostel.

Salads are another food that can be difficult to find in Chiang Mai. Even restaurants offering “western-style food” fail to offer true western-style salads.
